概要

　本稿では，日本の社会科学系データアーカイブにおいて複数の社会調査データの内容を英訳した経験から，誤訳や訳出の難しい概念が特定されるパターンとその原因について分析する．その上で，近年欧州で進展の著しいこの研究領域の知見にもとづき，適切な翻訳実践のために必要な仕組みについて論じる．社会調査の翻訳には，言語的な能力はもちろんのこと，専門分野の背景知識や，言語の背景にある社会の文脈を考慮した検討が必要になる．そうした複数の専門性を満たすようなチームを構成し，一人ではなく複数人の合議により最適な訳を決定していくプロセスこそが，先行研究で推奨されており，かつ実践的にも不可欠なアプローチである．また社会調査と翻訳の接点を考えることは，一国内での調査では表面化しにくい概念の測定上の課題を浮き彫りにすることを通じ，国際比較調査はもとより，国内での社会調査の実践に対しても有効な視点を提供するだろう．

abstract

This paper analyzes the patterns and causes of mistranslations and cases that require adaptations based on the experience of translating social surveys in a Japanese social science data archive. We then discuss the mechanisms necessary for appropriate translation practices. The translation of social research requires not only linguistic skills, but also background knowledge in specialized fields and the consideration of the social context behind the language. Formation of a team that meets these multiple specialties and following the process of deciding on the best translation in a group is the essence of the approach that we recommend. In addition, considering the intersection between social research and translation will provide a useful perspective on international comparative research as well as on the practice of domestic social research in Japan by highlighting issues of measuring concepts.
