Abstract:What is liberalism? The word 'liberalism,' which has its roots in the Latin word 'liberalis,' was born in the 19th century. It is often said there are two kinds of liberalism. One is classical liberalism, which emphasizes individual freedom and small government; and the other is modern liberalism, which stresses the role of government for social justice. Is such an explanation appropriate? Based on the current state of research, including the usage of this word in Japan, we reexamine the approaches to and strands of 'liberalism.'
