Title:Reception and Succession of the Past in Political Thought
Target:Open to the public
Abstract:Historians of political thought who study Meiji Japan have employed 'reception' as one of the most fruitful and profitable approaches. How Fukuzawa Yukichi received political thoughts of Guizot and Buckle; how Nakae Chomin received Rousseau's --these questions have been raised in assorted ways, either explicitly or implicitly. However, the reception approach has a much wider applicability. In the Western world, Greek and Roman writers have been repeatedly read, used, approved, or denounced. A reception perspective, in other words, provides a beneficial method to discuss politico-intellectual history in general. In this workshop, taking a cue from past political texts both in Japan and the West as well as contemporary political theorists, two speakers, a discussant, and a chair will show how 'reception' constitutes an indispensable part of the history of political ideas.
