Symposium: What Can Liberalism Do?
ー In Celebration of the Publication of Liberalism (University of Tokyo Press) ー

To celebrate the publication of Liberalism, we will hold a symposium on liberalism.
The contemporary world faces various difficulties, including war, division, and widening inequality. In a situation where not only people's interests conflict, but also differences in values exist that cannot easily be reconciled, what role can liberalism play in contemporary political society? Also, what kind of idea was liberalism for John Rawls, one of the leading political philosophers of the twentieth century? And what questions does his thought pose to us today?
In this symposium, we will welcome Professor Iwao Hirose and discuss the significance and challenges of liberalism today together with the editors and contributors of the book. Drawing on the contents of the book, we hope this will be an opportunity to reconsider the possibilities and limits of liberalism and to deepen our understanding of it.
