abstract

This paper examines the division of housework in Fukui Prefecture, where women's full-time employment and multigenerational household rates are high as compared to other prefectures. Research results indicate that (for Fukui Prefecture) total working hours of employed women (labor market and household work) are longer than those of men. Chronic overwork can be problematic because it not only tends to be associated with health risks but also may limit social participation. The results also suggest that while wives perform majority of the housework (as in other prefectures in Japan), housework by mothers (either the parent or in-law of the respondent) in multigenerational households comprises a large proportion of housework. Continuous employment of married women in Fukui Prefecture can be partly attributed to their mothers' contribution to housework. Further, the research suggests that the positive effects of wife's full-time employment and the presence of preschool children in the household on husband's housework are weakened if the husband lives in a multigenerational household; however, such a living arrangement does not affect (weaken) the effect of wife's income.
