abstract

This paper aims to consider several features of the transformation of Japanese social sciences in the 1990s. For this purpose, I examine articles of "Shakai Kagaku No Hoho (Methods of Social Sciences)", an anthology of representative contemporary Japanese social scientists, published in 1993-94. The themes discussed eagerly in these articles are the initial conditions of Japanese social sciences after the second world war : influences of the Controversy on Japanese Capitalism, inheritances of the War. Regime, and the dichotomy of Japan and Western Modernity. However, the results of these discussions were not fully developed in the latter half of the 1990s and still remain to be utilized today. I discuss lastly several goals to be achieved by Japanese social sciences today.
